Palmanova Virtual Lift

Experiencing Palmanova from Above with an Immersive Digital Lift

An immersive digital lift now offers tourists a unique way to experience Palmanova—from a perspective once reserved for aerial photography. This striking installation delivers the sensation of rising above the historic, star-shaped city and gives visitors a complete view of its UNESCO-listed fortifications. Designed by Roberto Maffioli and developed in collaboration with Videomobile, the project transforms cultural storytelling into an unforgettable digital journey.

The concept blends technology and heritage to create a fully immersive attraction. Instead of showing the city through static images or maps, the lift brings its geometry to life through movement, light, and sound. This experience invites tourists to feel the structure of Palmanova, not just see it. As a result, it creates a fresh and emotional connection to its history.

The Challenge: Simulating Flight in a Grounded Structure

Reproducing the sensation of vertical movement—without actual elevation—posed a clear challenge. The goal was to give visitors the thrill of taking off, and eventually flying over the city, all within a fixed installation. That illusion had to feel convincing from the very first moment. At the same time, it had to remain safe, stable, and accessible to all.

Moreover, the experience needed to be smooth, believable, and immersive. It also had to work day after day, withstanding the demands of continuous public use. Delivering realism without relying on complex mechanical systems meant every visual and sensory cue had to work in perfect harmony.

Our Solution: A Realistic, Fully Immersive Digital Lift

We responded with a complete digital lift experience, carefully engineered to simulate both ascent and aerial motion. The structure was purpose-built to resemble a real elevator, offering visitors a familiar starting point. From the outside, it features custom-designed graphics that attract attention and guide users inside.

Once the doors close, the transformation begins. Inside, the cabin is surrounded by 24 square metres of ultra-fine LED displays with a 1.5 mm pixel pitch. These high-definition screens cover three vertical walls and part of the floor, enveloping the viewer in dynamic visuals that recreate the feeling of movement. As the virtual lift rises, the view shifts seamlessly from ground level to a bird’s-eye perspective of Palmanova’s iconic star shape.

To heighten realism, we created a fully controlled environment. The temperature remains comfortable throughout the experience, while an advanced audio system follows every moment of the journey. Sounds evolve with the visuals, giving the impression of physical acceleration and flight.

Furthermore, a vibrating platform beneath the visitor’s feet provides tactile feedback. It simulates the initial lift-off of an elevator and gradually shifts into the pulsing rhythm of a helicopter in flight. This motion is timed precisely with the audio, enhancing immersion at every stage. We also installed real elevator doors to complete the illusion. As a result, guests feel as if they are truly rising through the air—yet never leave the ground.

The Benefits of a Seamless Immersive Digital Lift Experience

This immersive digital lift allows every visitor to experience the full geometry of Palmanova—something previously possible only from the sky. It removes physical barriers, making the city’s unique layout accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

In addition, the installation transforms passive tourism into something far more memorable. Visitors no longer just observe; they actively engage. The experience becomes emotional, sensory, and unforgettable.

Finally, it reflects a modern approach to tourism. The project bridges cultural heritage with cutting-edge innovation, showing how historic towns can embrace digital engagement without losing their identity. This immersive lift enhances the value of the visit, strengthens the town’s story, and delivers a moment worth sharing.
